of really neat things.

You can use it as your MP3 player or just set it to play the radio stations from their SHOUTcast network. And it seems to be all free. SHOUTcast is Nullsoft's (the maker of Winamp) Free Winamp-based distributed streaming audio

system. It boasts about 4500 servers, so there's lots of music to like. Thousands of broadcasters around the world are waiting for you to tune in and listen.

You're sure to find exactly what you want. It's so great to have music on call 24/7. And, even in Los Angeles where I live, where we have lots of local stations, there's nothing close to being able to choose just the exact type of music I want whenever I want and for as long as I want.

SHOUTcast is a fabulous contributor to my musical well-being. Like I said above, if the music you love makes you feel good all day, download Winamp and listen to their SHOUTcast stations.

Like Live365 on the prior page, you'll have a massive choice of highly focused stations that mostly play exactly the type of music you want to hear right now.

What's the difference between the two? Well, they really are similar. I think that Winamp's interface is slicker, but I think I've found even more of what I want at Live365. The easy answer is use both and choose what you like best.

Check out the Winamp player and then click on the SHOUTcast stations of your choice. You'll love the music.
Check Out The Winamp SHOUTcast Interface
This is one slick interface. It looks great and it's really easy to use. Most of the time you'll just have the small player (the upper right hand corner with my numbers 1 and 4 in it) open as you'll see below. But when you do open the main interface it's really a kick. And there's a neat little equalizer that let's you sculpt your sound as you listen. And all of you DAKonians know how I love what my equalizers can do for my sound. Anyway, let's look at this interface by the numbers.

1. As you're playing the Internet Radio broadcasts you'll see what's playing and often who's playing (it scrolls) and the bitrate. Always nice to know.

2. This is your playlist so you can see what's going on. The Internet Radio is only part of what Winamp does. It's also an excellent MP3 player. But today, I'm just dealing with the Internet Radio part. I just want you to know that it does much more.

3. This is the equalizer. I just dragged it here. You can put it anywhere. It really helps the sound quality. You can launch it and hide it with a single click just above the Thinger (4)

4. The Thinger is where you launch all parts of the player. It's really handy. You can access the playlist, preferences, visualizations (really great), library and much more.

5. A built in search box. How neat is this? Great idea.

6. A list of what you've heard.

There's much more. But like with most things, this is all you need. If you've got time to play, you'll find all sorts of neat things you can do and listen to. But all you really need is access to the music. And, now you've got it.

OK, just like 365, you'll have all the choices you can handle. What type of music do you want to listen to? Well look above. Again, I've made a broad selection of Oldies. You can be much more specific. Here's what I've marked by the numbers.

1. Just enter what you want in the search box. Station, Song, Artist, Genre. It's all easy. But frankly since isn't artist on demand. I think you'll find that you make a little broader choices here. But there are a ton of choices.

2. What to see what they've got? Just pull down the Genre menu and use the list of types of music to get you going.

3. Click this icon and you'll instantly tune in to any station you click. Lots of choices.

4. Good descriptions of the stations. You'll know before you go. It's easy and you'll go from station to station as you play with all your choices. It's better than flipping channels on TV. Because you'll always find a ton of good stuff.

There's much more but this will get you going.

Here's just a small part of the Genre pull down. So many choices.

And, speaking of choices I'm going to show you just a TINY sample of all you'll get below. Again, this is just to let you see what you'll be listening to as soon as you start using Winamp and their SHOUTcast broadcasts.

Remember Earth Angle? I love the song. And who's better than Buddy Holly to sing it? Or just switch to a Classic Rock Station like you'll see at the right.

Oh, did I mention that the numbers to the left are the elapsed time? And check out the neat Spectrum Analyzer to the left below the numbers. Pretty Neat.

So do you like Destiny's Child, or Eddie Rabbit? I'm just trying to show you how truly unlimited your choices will be.

You can always count on me to turn in a Folk Station. I do love my folk and especially my friends The Limeliters. They're the best. But, Hall and Oats aren't bad either. See them to the right.

How about a Concerto for 2 Mandolins? These stations play everything. My grandfather was a really good mandolin player so I learned to appreciate the capabilities really young. Of course to the right, I like Pat Boone too. He sure does sing well.

And let's finish Our short tour of the Winamp SHOUTcast services with a favorite Music For the Royal Fireworks. And, do you remember Blue Moon? Great song. Here's Sam Cooke singing it. But if you look below in the next section, you can get Dean Martin singing it too. And, he's definitely my favorite.

So, that's your quick tour of the Winamp SHOUTcast services. Do you see all you can do? All you can hear? All you can choose. It's really pretty neat. And you really are just a few minutes away from getting this on your own computer. So, what are you waiting for?

Part 3. Welcome To Drew's (Me) Favorite.
The Musicmatch MX Streaming Radio.

First A Few Words About Musicmatch Radio (Then the interface.)

OK, this is my favorite. Welcome to a world of such vast musical proportions that you could probably have never found it or been able to buy it anywhere before. And now it's all yours when you simply click your mouse.

Let me tell you what I did last night before I finished writing this part of the tutorial, I sat down with my wife in my office and I challenged her to come up with an artist that she wanted to listen to that I couldn't find and play in just a few seconds.

She started with Tom Jones, no problem. Then she said get me the Beach Boys and I did. Then she asked for Kenny Rogers. Easy. And we went on. But, what does all this mean to YOU?

Welcome to Artist on Demand from Musicmatch Radio MX. What's artist on demand? I think it's the greatest musical breakthrough, well, ever. Here's what it is. You can select from thousand of your favorite artists, new, old or in-between.

You pick the artist and then you'll hear nothing but that artist as this Artist On Demand personal radio network performs for you. Feel like Frank Sinatra? Listen to 667 uninterrupted tracks. Feel like Johnny Cash? Get 343 tracks. How about Nancy Wilson, Wayne Newton or Liza Minnelli? No problem, they're all here too.

Want Pavarotti, Yo-Yo Ma, or the Vienna Boys Choir? They're here too. How about composers? Feel like Baroque? Well how about Bach, Handel or Telemann? The choice is yours. Like Folk? Well how about Joan Baez, Peter Paul & Mary, or Arlo Guthrie. They're here too. As are the Kingston Trio, Judy Collins and Tom Paxton.

How about Rock & Roll? Well don't miss The Rolling Stones, Celine Dion, Bon Jovi, or Elton John. From Britney Spears to The Eagles to Santana and Jennifer Lopez, they're all here too.

The Interface Explained.

OK, I've got a few brief notes about the Interface above and then we'll get into the Music. Isn't that why we're here?

If you've already read my tutorials about turning your LPs to CDs, you've already seen the whole Musicmatch Interface. It's really the best. And if you haven't already converted your LPs, check out the software tutorial.

You'll be glad you did. There are lots of parts to the Musicmatch Interface including a great Library, excellent equalizer and much more. But today for the radio, we're just going to cover that part of their truly slick great working interface. OK, by the numbers above.

1. Here you can see what's playing, who's performing, the bitrate (see 4) and I like this part, you see both the total playing time and the time remaining. A really great feature. Of course with my love for Folk, I'm showing you the Kingston Trio. And they sound great.

2. OK this is terrific. You see the song title and artist here in the playlist. And just above the 2, you can see I'm in Artist On Demand. Is this great or what. As long as I stay tuned to this broadcast I'll hear nothing but The Kingston Trio. All Day. 24/7. Who can ask for more than that. Which artist do you want to hear all day?

3. These are the play and control buttons. In the Radio use, which is what we're doing here, you can use the Play and Stop button. Plus the Fast Forward button.

4. So, what kind of connection do you have? The streaming audio is MP3. And it sounds really good. If you're on a cable modem or DSL like I am, just click CD quality sound. If you're on a Dial Up, use the Low or Medium. Try it and see which is best for you. They all sound good. There's just more signal material bitrate in the CD.

OK, that's enough to get you going on the interface. It's pretty easy and it works great. Now let's just take a look at some of the music you can get. This is the good part. And don't forget with our PC to Stereo Protected Perfection Interface, you'll hear it all on your main stereo system

OK, there's MUCH, MUCH more than this to choose from. But we've got to start somewhere. You just choose the type of music, or the Era you want to listen to. And there are more choices than these, but let's start here. Because we haven't even scratched the surface of all you can hear.

Return To Section 1 Page 1 Of This Tutorial
So, I clicked the Folk (imagine that) and as you can see that brought up several different types of Folk choices. Then to the right, you can see that I'm going to click The Kingston Trio. You can also see that currently there are 106 tracks available for me to play.

Once I click an artist, I get the dialog box you see above. And this is really neat. I can either listen to Artist Match Radio, where I'll hear the artist I've selected PLUS related artists. Or, I can click (MY FAVORITE) Artist On Demand, and only listen to the artist I've selected. This is great. But, what if you want other artists LIKE the artist you've selected. This is great.

Then click the related artists (the arrow below left) and you'll see a list of similar artists that you might like to listen to. And since you don't have to buy them, why not click and listen and see if you can add an artist you don't know to the list of artists that you know and love? Is this great or What?

And finally, click the Artist Info and get a bio and much more of the artist you've chosen. It's all here for you. Wow, now do you see why this is my favorite?

Here I've clicked the Artist Info and you can see the beginning of the bio on the Kingston Trio. You can also see that there's a veritable wealth of information. The test goes on and on. It's all you'll ever want to know about so many artists.

Here I've clicked the Jazz Genre and then All artists. I think I'll listen to a little Miles Davis. He sure has a way with a horn.

My Mom was a concert pianist. And a very good one. I used to fall asleep at night under the piano (really) listening to Scarlatti. Now I can listen again. This really does make me feel good. I hope you feel good too.

Here's the dialog box for Scarlatti. As you can see there's Artist On Demand, so you'll be able to listen all day to Scarlatti, or change to another great composer.

Finally, I chose Vocal just to give you a taste of some of the older choices. From Britney Spears to Dean Martin, it's all here. I really do like Dino, and as I mentioned, I don't think anybody does Blue Moon like he does. But, you have so many choices, the only problem is having enough time to listen to them all.

OK, that's it for Musicmatch. I didn't have to show you as many screens because their lists are so complete. But I think they have the most choices and they are my number one pick. I think they'll be yours too.

Or, maybe it's Bluegrass, Folk or Country Swing. Now it's all yours.

Well, I found it here with my first click under Tartini. It was awesome. What great musical work, lost artist or favorite tunes would you like to find and listen to? And then onto some Mariachi music. Ole. Wow, what fun.
