Oh The Wonder Of Digital Music.

In 1981, I introduced a revolutionary portable cassette player that could play
a whole cassette while you walked or jogged and amazingly, it wouldn't skip or
jam as you moved. It weighed in at about 16 ounces (which was impressive), and
I sold it for $118, which was a breakthrough. And, by the way, for us in California
sales tax was just 6%. Oh well.
But now, here we are with an MP3 player that sounds 1000% times better weighs
less than 2 ounces, and not only plays one cassette, but easily carries the songs
from almost 100 cassettes.
And check this out. It has no moving parts. Could
you have imagined this in 1981? My 94-year old dad just looks at it
and shakes his head. It really is just like Star Trek. Think of how lucky we are.
No moving parts. That still amazes me too.
Plus it has a built in EQ, repeats anyway you like, and plays full-length movies,
movies from your digital camera and keeps your photos in one place too. Wow, do

This is so cool. I know it's a small screen. But you'll be amazed how clear and
easy it is to watch video. And it's super easy too. What's really amazing is that
all the videos you can shoot with just about any standard video camera play great.
If you look to the right, you'll see a screen shot of the video I shot of my grandson
less than an hour after he was born. It runs about 5 minutes and it's great to
watch and share.
I shot this with just a standard Sony digital camera. There was nothing to it.
I just switched from still pictures to movies and well, the rest is history. You'll

Below my grandson is a video of an octopus I shot in Maui. I shot this with my
digital video camera in an underwater housing. This is broadcast quality video

It's a text reader. You can load any text file like an email, something you copy
from the web or even a shopping list or notes for a speech you have to give.
I know the screen is small, but the text is really quite large and very readable.
You don't need reading glasses to see tiny type. It's bigger than you'd expect.
I find I use this more than I thought I would as I'm always carrying notes of
what I need to do. So I just load the text file on my way out the door and I'm
all set.
There's no special formatting needed. Just use Windows notepad or save from Word
or email as a text file and you're all set.

It's a very basic phone number list. It's worth listing some numbers you don't
want to forget, but frankly if you have a PDA, use that.
I think it's nice to list the numbers here if you're likely to have this player
with you and not your PDA. It's fast and easy, but like I said very basic.

OK you're in for a surprise. You won't believe the quality of the recordings you
can make Fine or Voice quality recordings. Use Voice for dictation and Fine for
live music or lectures.
Oh, and how many times are you in the car or somewhere where you need to capture
a phone number, an address or even driving directions. Now it's all easy.
Just click record and dictate anything you need to remember or better yet, let
the person giving you the information record it for you.
Or what if you hear a song you like on the Radio? Well record it as it plays (you
probably won't get the beginning). Then play it back at home and track it down
and buy the CD or download. Now you can always record what you think or hear.
The built-in Mic is amazingly sensitive and the recordings are much, much better
than you'd expect.
Plus there's more. For both Fine and Voice quality recordings there is VOX or
VOR as it's called. VOX means voice operated record and what this amazing recorder
will do when you select VOX is only record when there is actual sound to record.
So if you leave this recorder in VOX and leave the room, it will not record unless
someone talks or makes sound.
This is really great for long-time recordings of room sounds and people when there
are long silences along the way. And take it to a concert and use it to record
the actual live concert.
It's so small that it will be no problem at all to record the live concerts to
help you remember the wonderful times you've had. Sure it's not going to be CD
quality from where you are probably sitting, but you'll have a digital memory
that you can enjoy over and over again.

Does
It Hold 500 or 1000 Or. . . Songs?

OK here's the idea. An average song is about 2.5 minutes.
So in reality that's about 800 songs in the 2-gig player. And, in the 4-gig player,
about 1600 songs will fit. But, none of us really knows how long your songs might
be.
They probably aren't all rock and roll songs from the 60s. So we take a conservative
number and that's why we say you'll get about 1000 songs for 4-Gig player rather
than 1600. Here's how it's calculated. A minute of 128-Bit MP3 is just about 1
megabyte. 128-Bit is the standard for CD quality sound.
So if you simply divide 4000-Megs (that's 4-Gigs) by 2.5-Megs (2.5 Minutes per
song) you do get 1600. But we don't know for sure that you are using 128-Bit (it's
the standard) and how long your songs really are, and yes there's a bit of overhead
in the player too. Now you know. |
